Three great website usability tips

Here are three MUST remember and MUST implement tips to help make your website a success.

1. Include taglines in your copy

Include taglines like your motto or company mission that describes your website in one phrase.

It should also be one of the most obviously places and eye catching phrase on the very first page of your website. It should be the most obvious element on a website’s front page and it should clearly describe the website in one phrase. Why? An analysis conducted on website functionality and traffic has shown that a website has just 8 seconds to capture their visitor’s attention for them feel interested enough to look into the website further. Without a clear, catchy and well placed tagline a website would have a hard time holding the visitors attention long enough to browse the inner pages.

2. Sitemaps and Site Search

Sitemaps are a brilliant way to summarize the contents of your website in one shot.

All, pages and sub pages can be listed systematically allowing your website visitor an idea about the contents of your website in one short glance. A relatively new website feature, sitemaps are a sure-shot way to improve web page navigation and better Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

A site search is another very important element to incorporate onto a website. When a visitor is looking for something, they would typically look for a text field where they can enter their search term. Not only is this a brilliant way for you to make information easily available, but also a way to improve SEO. Ideally the search field should be about 27 characters long so that the entered text is clearly visible to your visitor. Also place the search box strategically at the top of your website pages. Next, be sure to include a neat search button and clearly specify the search text. It is better that you refrain from using text such as Go or Submit on your button, since these phrases may mislead your visitors.

3. Easily scannable web pages

Keep your webpages as simple as possible. A visitor needs to comprehend what you’re saying even if he’s just scanning through your page.

If your visitor’s attention is held by a certain phrase on your website while he or she is scanning through it, you can be sure that he will want to read the content in more detail. What you can do to maki your pages easily scannable is to use titles, bold or italicize points, and emphasized text or lists.

A catchy headline and a catchy first paragraph is a good way to make readers read the whole article. Try to organize your page content in an inverted pyramid format. By this we mean, place the most important information you want your visitor to read at the top and progress to the bottom by placing information of importance. Any information that you might consider news worthy could go right at the top.

The trick is to keep your website content simple yet catchy.

A Website Owner’s Guide to Online Selling

If you’re a website owner and are looking for ways to incorporate online shopping for your products and/or services, you’ll want to know the different methods that are available to help you to effectively make a sale on the web.

The internet has got a number of extremely popular and easy to incorporate facilities to enable online selling on a website.

It depends on the kind of sale you want to make on your website.

Incase you’re looking for something that simplistic like ‘Buy Now’ buttons or the choice of adding a limited few items to a cart, both PayPal and Google Checkout allow you to create accounts and enable the generation and implementation of these codes directly onto your website. A relatively easy process, all you need to do is signup for an account, follow a set of instructions and fill up the products descriptions, prices and/or delivery charges if applicable. Once you’ve filled up these details, an HTML code will be generated keeping in mind these parameters that you can copy-paste onto your website. Now users who wish to buy your product/service need to click onto the ‘Buy Now’ button and would be redirected to the PayPal or Google website to complete the transaction. Incase you’re wondering if your customer needs to be a member to be able to complete the transaction on PayPal or Google, you need to know that he or she might be asked to sign up for an account if they aren’t account holders or remain non-members of the website and perform just a one off purchase.

The down side to ‘Buy Now’ buttons would be that you aren’t given the ability to track stocks and sales unless manually done yourself. But if you’re using this feature for a small number of items on sale this should be a big problem.
On the other hand, if you want to offer a complete customized shopping experience on the internet, you could choose between PayPal and Google Checkout for your online shopping service. You have the option of incorporating things like an inventory tracking codes, automatic tax additions and shipping costs. Though, you might want to keep into consideration the cost of such customized carts. Because, the more advanced a cart is made, the more knowledge may be required in the incorporation of the cart in the HTML code of your website and thereby increasing the costs of the cart.

Security of transaction is always an issue on a users mind. The main question of doubt is usually whether his or her credit information would remain secure. The plus point of websites like PayPal and Google Checkout is that when a customer clicks on the ‘Buy Product’ button they are redirected to the merchant’s website. This clear link provides sure shot assurance that any payments made are secure and handled by the merchant website thus ensuring quality service and security for both you and your customers. Another added plus point is that once a payment is made to a purchase of a service both you and your customer will receive a confirmation email about completion of transaction.

Applying features like the shopping cart on a website could get complicated for you to do yourself especially if you do not have an extended knowledge of HTML. In this case you can easily look up a website designer who would have the necessary expertise to incorporate a full shopping cart on your website. Having this done may cost you a bit of money but in the long run, having a smooth running website that handles transactions effectively is surely going to sit very well with your customers! You can be sure of positive high returns to any investment that you make towards the implementation of your shopping cart.

Css Website Templates

Essentially a style sheet language that is used to define the look and formatting of a document written in HTML, XHTML, PHP, etc; CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) are by far and wide one of the topmost essential elements in the creation of a website design.

Designers use CSS documents to segregate a document’s content from the layout formatting, font colors etc. Yes, CSS styles can be applied directly into an HTML document in the Head of the document.

You might say that having elements like Heading (h1), sub-heading (h2) tags, and so on automatically take care of all headings and subheadings in your HTML document. So why use CSS? CSS allows a designer with much flexibility pertaining to the formatting of text, alignment, spacing, borders, shadows, hovers and lots lots more!

In my opinion having streams of inline CSS contents in your document wouldn’t only make the code look messy but could also confuse the developer that deals with your file if and when a project is transferred. With grid website design becoming more and more popular, it is best that a CSS file is maintained to ensure none of the codes in your CSS clash with those on your document.

FTP Download

Your website designer may not always be around to help you upload images and or files that you want updated over a period of time. So what do you do? You definitely cannot leave a website static and without change for a long period of time. That would just affect your website rankings and make it harder for you to stay in focus of your target audience. The last thing you want is to lose your audience to your competitor.

Webmasters can now utilize a function called FTP client, which is a tool that allows you to upload files to your server or website. FTP client is a handy tool that allows you to upload files onto your server in an automated process and not file by file in a control panel.

Obtaining FTP client software isn’t difficult at all. There are many sources on the internet that let you download their FTP client software for free. Once such software is Filezilla. This software allows you to see up to four sections that clearly list files stored in your computer or your web server. These files located in your folders expand as you click on it to reveal detailed listings showing all the content in that particular folder. To put it simply, Filezilla makes the whole process of uploading of files as easy as the moving of files from one folder to another on your computer

Next is the matter of setting up a connection. A relatively small problem. You just need to setup an FTP account in your hosting account though your control panel. Once you create it you shall be provided with log in details, with which you can gain access to your web server using your FTP software. The concept of logging into your FTP account is very much like that of logging into an email account to check your emails. Once logged in, a user can see a list of files and folders stored in that account

To have all your files and folders accessible as a proper website on the internet, you usually need to upload your files in the ‘public_HTML’ folder on your account. In this folder you might find a list of sub folders. The folder called ‘www’ or a folder with your domain name is the one in which you have to upload your files into to be visible on the internet. Don’t worry; the folder is usually listed in a very simple fashion and is easy enough to find. All that remains now is to select the files you want to upload and hit the upload button or simply drag and drop the files from one section to another.

A very time saving and easy to use software, the FTP client is literally a blessing in disguise for website owners! We suggest you can use clean and neat solution from www.coreftp.com

Replace flash objects with Jquery scripts

Animation on a website doesn’t necessarily need to be in the form of a flash banner or animated gifs any longer. Thanks to the effects that can be magicked out of a jquery script combines with CSS elements, you now have an array of brilliant effects that you can apply to your website. Scrolling banners, fancy dropdown menus and mouse over effects are just some of the many fascinatingly effective effects that you can achieve with jquery.

Testing a jquery code is always essential. You need to do so to ensure that your script works in the right way across multiple browsers. Sifting through your jquery scripts and CSS style sheets will allow you to locate bugs that would cause both you and a user much annoyance in terms of functionality of the effect.

There’s a lot to be achieved from a strong jquery script, though you need to remember to not over load your website with too many effects. Your website visitor would be left floundering through your website if you have too many slide in-out effects, hover links and the likes that could get him or her distracted from the actual information on your website.

Talk to your designer/developer and discuss the possibilities of integrating your website with jquery.
